Malaysia Airlines Awarded Coveted ATW’s Phoenix Award

Subang: Malaysia Airlines was presented with the Phoenix Award by Penton Media's Air Transport World, the leading monthly magazine covering the global airline industry.

The Phoenix Award recognizes airlines that have gone through a life changing transformation. Malaysia Airlines came within months of shutting down in 2006 due to financial losses, but turned itself around through a restructuring program that contributed to record earnings for the first 9 months of 2007, without affecting its reputation for excellent service.

Malaysia Airlines Managing Director/ Chief Executive Officer, Dato’ Sri Idris Jala said, “We are delighted to be presented with this award which recognizes the hard work of our employees, all of whom have contributed their hands and hearts in a collective effort to turn the airline around. This award will not be possible without them, and the support we have received from the Malaysian government and business partners.

“With the completion of our business turnaround a year ahead of schedule, we have embarked on the next journey, to transform Malaysia Airlines into a Five Star Value Carrier, to deliver the highest quality services at affordable prices.”

For the first 9 months of 2007, Malaysia Airlines made a net profit of RM610 million, the highest profit in its 60-year history. This exceeded its Business Turnaround Plan target of RM50 million for 2007, and even its target of RM500 million profit for 2008. Even with the Q407 result still to be included, the airline has already surpassed its highest ever annual profit recorded, RM460 million in 2004.

Malaysia Airlines have also continued to maintain the momentum in garnering awards by distinguishing itself amongst passengers for providing excellent services and hospitality. Awards received in 2007 include the 5-Star Airline Award, by Skytrax UK, World’s Best Cabin Staff, Skytrax, and Asia's Leading Business Class Airline, World Travel Award.

Meanwhile, MAS will put six million seats on offer during the Malaysia Airlines Travel Fair (MATF) to be held in Kuala Lumpur, Johor Baru, Penang, Kuala Terengganu, Kota Kinabalu and Kuching from Feb 22 to 24.
