Video - Ironman Malaysia Triathlon 2008 :-

Anticipation was mounting for first timers and others alike as they were prepared even before the sunrise at the river bank near Dataran Lang. Differed by age, 700 participants from 38 countries were afloat at the first signal at 7.30am, getting ready for their first round of the triathlon -- swimming 3.8km. The race officially started at 7.45am.

Mathieu Ohalloran, 22, from Canada was leading in the swim, which gave him the upper hand to bike. Following behind him in less than an hour was Faris Al Sultan, 30, from Germany. In the women's category Hillary Biscay, 29, from USA was in the lead and this is her first time here to compete in Langkawi. Second place in the swimming competition was Elmar Schuberth from Austria.

However the final result, exclaimed by the energetic emcee, Whit Raymond was different. Faris Al Sultan is now officially the champ and Ironman of Langkawi Ironman Triathlon 2008. He was amazingly an hour and 50 minutes ahead of the initial targeted time. He reached at 8 hours 34 minutes and 41 seconds.

The Ironman in the women's category for this year also differed despite Hillary's lead. Australia born 37 year old Belinda Granger stole the title as she crossed the finish line at 9 hours 29 minutes and 20 seconds with a big grin. She has won many triathlons, among them are at Quelle Wanaka New Zealand and Ironman Singapore.

"I'm very thrilled that I won as I was not in the lead from the beginning," said Belinda during a short 'interrogation' by Whit.

Faris on the other hand said he won because he is a pro. He is indeed a professional triathlete and the winner of the recent Ironman Triathlon in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii.

His win today allows him to compete in Kona, Hawaii.

As the crowd keep pouring in at Dataran Lang to view this spectacular event, the organisers, contestants and others alike are eagerly waiting for all of the other contestants to complete their race. The race is expected to end after midnight. It will be all massages and good rest for those who have already made it to the finish line.

This adrenalin pumping event is proudly brought to you by LIEM, the organisers and supported by Kedah State Government.

There will also be pocket shows, such as aerobics, performances from local artistes, karaoke contest, dancing and other activities held concurrently with the beach and sea activities.

As the stars come out to play, the night skies of Pantai Chenang will be filled with music and festivities over the three nights with performances by renowned local artistes. Each night will be themed differently, with the performances and performers in tune with the theme.

The second and more challenging half of the Malaysia Water Festival comes in the form of the Labuan International Sea Challenge. Taking place from 19 April, 2008 to 27 April, 2008, the activities will be focused around the Labuan International Sea Complex in Labuan.

There are 6 main sea activities that form the Labuan International Sea Challenge, amongst other beach-side activities, which are the Labuan Boat Tug Of War, Labuan-Brunei International Extreme Kayak Challenge, Labuan International Game Fishing Tournament (IGFA Regulated), Round Island Kayak Challenge, Labuan International Boat Race and the Labuan Cross Channel Swimming Challenge.

These activities have previously garnered and will continue to garner not only local, but also regional and international participation due to its challenging nature. The expected crowd turnout in Labuan is over 100,000 people.

In tandem with the government’s aim to foster and promote bilateral ties among its neighbours, this year’s edition of the Malaysia Water Festival works closely with participants from the IMTGT region. The week-long challenge has a golden pot of prizes totaling hundreds of thousands of ringgit.

Throughout the on-going activities during the Malaysia Water Festival 2008, booths will be erected in the event venue vicinity with exhibitions and sales of locally made items, food & beverage and mini-demonstrations. AirAsia Unveils World's 1st AT&T Williams Formula One A320 Aircraft

AirAsia Unveils World's 1st AT&T Williams Formula One A320 Aircraft
AirAsia Unveils World's 1st AT&T Williams Formula One A320 Aircraft.

Sepang, 20th March 2008 - AirAsia, the leading and largest low cost carrier in Asia, today unveiled the world’s first commercial A320 aircraft with a Formula One team livery. The unveiling of the aircraft, whose livery is an exact look-alike of the AT&T Williams racing car, was held to coincide with the Malaysian Grand Prix which starts on 21 March 2008 and to mark AirAsia’s extended three year partnership with the AT&T Williams Formula One team.

AirAsia’s AT&T Williams aircraft is a fitting tribute to Williams’ traditional racing colours of blue and white, whilst the ‘nose’ of the aircraft is designed to look like Nico Rosberg’s racing helmet. The aircraft AFW30 was named ‘Sir Frank Williams’ in tribute to Sir Frank Williams, Team Principal of AT&T Williams.

Fans of the famed drivers came all the way around the region to seize the golden opportunity from the greet and meet session with the drivers. They were joined by Dato’ Tony Fernandes, Group CEO of AirAsia Berhad, Adam Parr, Williams F1 Chief Executive Officer, AirAsia Board of Directors and also the local and regional media.

The session also saw both drivers touring the aircraft as well as setting the fastest lap time on AirAsia’s AT&T Williams Formula One simulator which was located at the LCCT concourse area. Fans also had the privilege of getting close to a Formula One car by taking part in a virtual race on AirAsia’s AT&T Williams Formula One simulator. The experience and unique chance to sit in the driving seat of a Formula One car provided them a whole new dimension to the game and it was almost good as the real race itself!

Prior to LCCT, the AirAsia’s AT&T Williams Formula One simulator has been around town to build-up the hype prior to the F1 race. These places include One Utama Shopping Mall, Sunburst Festival, Bangsar Village and subsequently at the Sepang Circuit from 23-24 March 2008. Plans are underway to embark on a regional road show to Jakarta, Thailand as well as other destinations serviced by AirAsia.

Dato’ Tony Fernandes, Group Chief Executive Officer, AirAsia Berhad said “As a true 5-star low fare airline, we are proud to be associated with AT&T Williams Team. We have always believed in investing in great talents and embracing innovation that sets us apart from the other airlines. We are glad that our vision in this investment is reaping rewards as AT&T Williams Team is such an incredible success story. Their performance-driven spirit, independently owned, distinctiveness and passion are the same qualities that we strive for. AirAsia echoes these qualities as we are a reflection of a true Malaysian company that has high hopes to become a truly global player, building a company from scratch to become the leading and largest low cost carrier in Asia,”

“We are extremely pleased to have Nico Rosberg and Kazuki Nakajima here with us today. This tie-up is not only a good learning avenue for us but is also a platform to achieve the highest quality and safety standards by sharing experience, embracing the values of teamwork in the pursuit of our goals. This is yet another exciting development for AirAsia as one of our key strategies is to extend our brand globally and communicate with people via sports marketing. The unveiling of AT&T Williams livery sees us moving closer to achieving this goal through our partnership with such an impressive and inspiring team.” concluded Dato’ Tony Fernandes

Nico Rosberg, AT&T Williams Formula One driver said “It has been incredible to see the AT&T Williams livery on AirAsia’s plane. I’m delighted that the design of my helmet, which I have been racing with all my life, has been used to create a lasting tribute to the team’s partnership with Air Asia.”

“I am very impressed at how well the Williams Toyota FW30’s design has translated to the AFW30 Airbus. I think we would all like to thank AirAsia for this great venture and we are proud to be associated with the Airline of the Year 2007. This is indeed a source of inspiration to both of us going into the Malaysian Grand Prix this weekend.” added Kazuki Nakajima, AT&T Williams Formula One driver.

AT&T Williams is one of the world’s leading Formula One teams with 16 Formula One World Champions titles to date. The partnership with AirAsia, announced in April 2007, forms part of the airline’s long term branding strategy to build a global brand.

The AirAsia and AT&T Williams Partnership
The AirAsia and AT&T Williams sponsorship is part of our commitment towards building the AirAsia brand globally, with year-round exposure as the Grand Prix races take place in 17 countries that will reach out to a broader customer base. The sponsorship deal with also be highlighted via an integrated marketing programme across the region aimed at further strengthening the AirAsia brand, already successful in the Asia Pacific region.

According to Dato' Tony Fernandes, "Our rationale to sponsor Williams is to associate our AirAsia brand with Formula One as it is the epitome of technology.

One of our brand strategies is also to promote our brand overseas and to reach people via sports marketing and Formula 1 provides an ideal platform for this. We also share the same values as Williams, namely quality, technological precision, world-class performance and efficiency. Williams' sheer determination and spirit are definitely an inspiration for all of us in AirAsia."

Munich/Hinwil, 16th March 2008. The BMW Sauber F1 Team heads for a home event this coming weekend, exactly 9,778 kilometres distant from Munich and 10,012 kilometres from the Swiss headquarters at Hinwil: the Malaysian Grand Prix is held under the sponsorship of the team’s premium partner, Petronas.

Nick Heidfeld:

“For years now the Malaysian Grand Prix has been rather a special race for me. Petronas, of course, was already a partner of Sauber when I was driving for them from 2001 to 2003, and we used to do promotional tours around the country. As a Formula One driver you usually don’t get to see much beyond airports, hotels and race tracks as there simply isn’t the time to get to know a country and its people. But in Malaysia I’ve already managed to get around quite a bit and I feel very much at home there. It always takes a while to get acclimatised to the combination of heat and high humidity, but that’s never been a problem for me. The circuit is an attractive and challenging one. Last year I had a great race in Sepang and finished fourth. I managed to get past Felipe Massa and kept the Ferrari in check behind me.”

Robert Kubica:

“I’m looking forward to the race in Malaysia because Sepang is a very challenging track which I’m fond of. Of course the climatic conditions are at the extreme end, which makes it even more of a challenge. But fortunately we already had very high temperatures in Melbourne, so we’ve had a bit of a chance to adjust. Last year our car was very competitive, but for me pretty much everything went wrong. So I still have a score to settle in Sepang. The Malaysian Grand Prix is a very special race for us on account of our partner Petronas. We have a lot of fans rooting for us there.”

Mario Theissen, BMW Motorsport Director:

No sooner have we ticked off the season opener in Australia than Malaysia is already beckoning. This Grand Prix is a kind of home race for us. Since 2006 we have experienced the sheer charisma that our premium partner Petronas has in Malaysia. The euphoric welcome extended to our team in this country is a fantastic experience every time, and the various events held at the foot of the Petronas Twin Towers have always exerted a magnetic pull. As part of its Asia strategy, the BMW Group has ramped up its involvement in Malaysia over recent years. The race in the Greater Kuala Lumpur area is an important grand prix for both BMW and Petronas.

Following the unexpectedly hot battle in Melbourne, we now head for the steam bath of Sepang. Not only are temperatures above 30° Celsius, but humidity levels are also extremely high due to the proximity to the equator. Consequently, we are looking ahead to this test of endurance with bated breath.”

Petronas Malaysian Grand Prix

Willy Rampf, Technical Director:

The race in Australia has given us a first pointer as to where the individual teams stand, but no more than that. That’s because the Albert Park circuit with its distinctive characteristics is not very representative. And so I believe we won’t get a reliable picture of the true balance of power until after the Malaysian Grand Prix. Due to its many differing corners, Sepang makes huge demands on the set-up of the cars. The slow sections require plenty of traction, while high stability levels are crucial particularly for the many fast corners. Good aerodynamic efficiency is another essential. In Sepang, moreover, the rear tyres come in for a great deal of punishment, which will be exacerbated further by the absence of traction control.

Petronas Malaysian Grand Prix

History and background:

The Sepang International Circuit is just under an hour’s drive south of the vibrant downtown area of Kuala Lumpur. This year the race track celebrates its 10th anniversary along with the 10th appearance of Formula One here.

The name Kuala Lumpur translates as “muddy estuary” after its location at the mouth of the rivers Gombak and Klang. KL, as the city is popularly known today, is the heartbeat of modern Malaysia. With a population of around 1.5 million, more than half of them Chinese, the capital is also the country’s largest city. Extending over an area of 244 square kilometres, KL offers a thriving Asian culture alongside British colonial buildings and landmark high-tech edifices such as the 88-storey PETRONAS Twin Towers that rise to a height of 452 metres.

Kuala Lumpur was founded in the middle of the jungle by tin miners in 1857. In 1896, under British rule, the Malay Sultanates formed the Federation of Malaya with Kuala Lumpur as its capital. In 1957 Kuala Lumpur became the capital of the newly independent country.

The PETRONAS (Petroliam Nasional Berhad) company, which is the premium partner of the BMW Sauber F1 Team, was founded on 17th August 1974. PETRONAS, with its head office in Kuala Lumpur’s Twin Towers, is a multinational gas and petroleum group operating in more than 30 countries. The group is engaged at a local and global level. Its activities include upstream exploration and production as well as downstream oil refining, marketing and distribution of petroleum products, trading, gas processing and liquefaction, gas pipeline network operations, marketing of liquefied natural gas, manufacturing and marketing of
petrochemical products, maritime logistics and property investment.

Sepang Circuit History

The state-of-the-art circuit, Sepang International Circuit was officially opened on March 9, 1999 by the Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Dr. Mahathir Mohamad. It was completed in a record of 14 months and with the recognition of its ultramodern facilities, it was given the honour to incorporate the F1 logo in its name.

Situated 85km from Kuala Lumpur city centre, it is accessible via modern North-South Expressway, Railway Links and a network of Highways. Being closely situated to the Kuala Lumpur International Airport makes it an ideal place for world-class international events.

With the length of 5.543 km, the track features 15 turns and 8 straights with access speed of more than 300km/h. the track allows ample opportunities for overtaking, ensuring a suspense and thrills of the race.

Malaysia, however, is not only looking at Sepang International Circuit as only a physical facility for Motorsports. In this place called ‘Home of Motorsports’ lies the aspiration of making Malaysia as the hub for motor racing activities in the region and a catalyst to spark a new beginning of Malaysia’s motorsports.

In all, the track can accommodate up to 130,000 spectators at a time. It can fill up the grand stand with 32,000 spectators at the Main Grand Stand and 18 corporate suites. New Grand Stand K and F, which can fill up another 18,500 spectators facing, turn 1 and 7 respectively.

The 1.3 km length of double frontage grandstand affords a view of the circuit’s longest straight. The grandstand is constructed along the east-west alignment to ensure shade from the sun’s glare at all times.

The heart of the circuit and focal point is the three-storey Pit Building, facing the main grand stand. All the main facilities are housed here 33 Pits, Race Control Room, Time – Keeping Room, Paddock Clubs and management offices.

The administrative block for Sepang F1 Circuit is the Welcome Centre, which also serve as the gateway to the Main Grand Stand. Apart form the offices; it also housed the Sepang Circuit Shoppe, a restaurant and an exhibition hall.

The track is electronically linked through a network of fibre optic cabling system along the track to 27 closed circuit TV cameras, which is centrally monitored at the Race Control Room. Every incident along the 5.543km circuit is recorded by the cameras and will be closely watched by the clerk of the course during events.

Safety is the utmost importance and for that Sepang F1 Circuit has a special block dedicated for its Medical Centre. It is situated next to the Pit Building and during major events; this block will be transformed into a fully equipped mini hospital.

Sepang Will Be Different, Says Mokhzani

Formula One Petronas Malaysian Grand Prix
17 March 2008, By Sepang International Circuit.

Thrilled with just concluded Australian Grand Prix, Sepang International Circuit chairman Datuk Mokhzani Tun Dr Mahathir, however, believes that the upcoming 2008 Formula One Petronas Malaysian Grand Prix this Sunday will be even more exciting.

Speaking at RTM’s morning talk show, Selamat Pagi Malaysia today, Mokhzani said that Sepang was ready to deliver the best ever race in its 10-year history and that he expected the race at Sepang to be a three-cornered fight between McLaren, Ferrari and BMW Sauber for the top honours.

“We saw the power of the McLaren in Australia and a convincing performance from the BMW Sauber. Ferrari did not do well; but I expect that they would be determined to bounce back in Sepang,” said Mokhzani.

McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton drew first blood in the battle of world championship; winning the season’s opening race comfortably with Nick Heidfeld of BMW Sauber and Williams’ Nico Roseberg coming second and third respectively. Fernando Alonso finished fourth and Kimi Raikkonen finishing with a single point in eighth position after Rubens Barrichello was disqualified.
Formula One Petronas Malaysian Grand Prix
He also said that Sepang would be providing a different kind of challenge for the teams and drivers as the Malaysian F1 track was entirely different from the street circuit of Albert Park in Melbourne.

Unlike in Melbourne where only seven of the 22 cars finished the car, Mokhzani said that the race in Sepang would definitely see more finishers with the Malaysia’s specially-built F1 track offering larger run-off areas and teams coming better prepared in Sepang after studying their performance in the opening round of the season.

Targeting a record 125,000 spectators for the race, Mokhzani also believed that the inaugural Singaporean Grand Prix would help Sepang in the attendance; pointing out that the hype and excitement for the inaugural race in the island republic would increase awareness and interest for the Malaysian GP as well.

“I don’t see that the two races in Malaysia and Singapore would compete against each other. Instead, I would think that the fans would want to see both races … one at the start of the season in Sepang and the other at the tail end of the season in Singapore,” he said.

Malaysia hosts Round 2 this weekend from March 21 to 23 while Singaporean Grand Prix, which will be the first night race in the history of Formula One, has been slotted as Round 15 from September 26 to 28.

Situated on the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia, Terengganu borders with Kelantan on its north and Pahang in the south. The state has the longest coastline in the country with beautiful islands, where majority have been gazetted as Marine Parks. The state is characterized by a strong Malay culture, laid-back lifestyle, tranquil coastal towns and rustic villages.

Other than pristine beaches and islands, the state is also home to the picturesque Kenyir Lake, the largest man-made lake in Southeast Asia. 12 March 2008, By Hafidah Samat, New Straits Times.

Grammy-Award winning singer-songwriter Natalie Cole will be staging her maiden performance at Petronas Malaysia Grand Prix Anniversary Gala 2008 gala dinner at Hilton Kuala Lumpur on March 20.

Known for her vocal prowess and natural interpretation of lyrical interpretation Cole, who earned her first Grammy trophy in 1975, will serenade the audience in a 75-minute showcase featuring her classic hits including Miss You Like Crazy, Pink Cadillac, When I Fall In Love and L-O-V-E.

Showtime is at 10.15pm.

Hafez Mohamed from All Sports Services Sdn Bhd, who is the event organiser, said the deal with Cole’s management company came through about a month ago.

“This is the fourth year the company is organising the gala dinner and it gets bigger and grander by the year. We are excited to have Natalie to grace the grand stage this year,” said Hafez.

The album featured a duet of the title track, with her father created by splicing a recording of his vocals into the track.

The gala dinner will feature Malaysia’s very own Melissa Indot as opening act. Hosted by Sepang International Circuit the event is sponsored by Tourism Malaysia and Petronas.

Express Rail Link (ERL) and Sepang International Circuit (SIC) jointly announced the KLIA Transit Formula One Transfer Package, the fastest way to the race, today at a media event held in Kuala Lumpur City Air Terminal (KL CAT).

At the launch ceremony, Dr Aminuddin Adnan, CEO ERL, said he was very honoured to share the stage with YBhg Dato Azmi Murad who has steadily built the Malaysian GP into its 10th year and the most prestigious world sporting event here in Malaysia successfully.

He added, “ERL is now into our 6th year in supporting the Malaysian Grand Prix. Since we introduced this hassle-free transfer to the race in 2003, motor racing fans have been increasingly selecting this preferred mode of transport to the F1 race. Last year we carried close to 6,000 fans over the three days of which over 90% were foreigners. We earnestly hope to entice more Malaysians to switch to this mode of transport to the race. As in previous year, we are putting in additional trains and shuttle coaches at peak hours especially after the races, to ensure fans enjoy quick transfers.”

Reciprocating at the event, YBhg Dato Azmi Murad, Senior General Managing SIC said, “With an anticipated attendance of 125,000 spectators and tens of thousands of vehicles converging at the circuit for the race, we can expect traffic congestion. In that context, I personally urge racing fans to use public transportation to come for the race. The best move would be to take full advantage of the amazing package being offered by ERL to come to the circuit and enjoy the race.”

Available on the KLIA Transit, these F1 Transfer Packages are priced at RM80 for the Race-Day Package per person and RM120 for the Three-Day Package per person.
