Malaysia Airlines Awarded Coveted ATW’s Phoenix Award

Subang: Malaysia Airlines was presented with the Phoenix Award by Penton Media's Air Transport World, the leading monthly magazine covering the global airline industry.

The Phoenix Award recognizes airlines that have gone through a life changing transformation. Malaysia Airlines came within months of shutting down in 2006 due to financial losses, but turned itself around through a restructuring program that contributed to record earnings for the first 9 months of 2007, without affecting its reputation for excellent service.

Malaysia Airlines Managing Director/ Chief Executive Officer, Dato’ Sri Idris Jala said, “We are delighted to be presented with this award which recognizes the hard work of our employees, all of whom have contributed their hands and hearts in a collective effort to turn the airline around. This award will not be possible without them, and the support we have received from the Malaysian government and business partners.

“With the completion of our business turnaround a year ahead of schedule, we have embarked on the next journey, to transform Malaysia Airlines into a Five Star Value Carrier, to deliver the highest quality services at affordable prices.”

For the first 9 months of 2007, Malaysia Airlines made a net profit of RM610 million, the highest profit in its 60-year history. This exceeded its Business Turnaround Plan target of RM50 million for 2007, and even its target of RM500 million profit for 2008. Even with the Q407 result still to be included, the airline has already surpassed its highest ever annual profit recorded, RM460 million in 2004.

Malaysia Airlines have also continued to maintain the momentum in garnering awards by distinguishing itself amongst passengers for providing excellent services and hospitality. Awards received in 2007 include the 5-Star Airline Award, by Skytrax UK, World’s Best Cabin Staff, Skytrax, and Asia's Leading Business Class Airline, World Travel Award.

Meanwhile, MAS will put six million seats on offer during the Malaysia Airlines Travel Fair (MATF) to be held in Kuala Lumpur, Johor Baru, Penang, Kuala Terengganu, Kota Kinabalu and Kuching from Feb 22 to 24.

The success of the Visit Malaysia Year 2007 campaign has spurred interest among three state governments to embark on a similar campaign in their states for the year 2008. The states that are organizing a Visit State Year 2008 are Terengganu, Kelantan and Kedah.

Visit Terengganu 2008

Visit Terengganu 2008 was officially launched on 1 January 2008 together with the proclamation of Kuala Terengganu, the state’s capital, as a city.

An idyllic destination for total relaxation, Terengganu is blessed with pristine islands with an abundance of marine lives, untouched rainforest and a unique culture. With its tagline, Terengganu … Where Nature Embraces Heritage”, the campaign focuses on the three main treasures of Terengganu: nature, tradition and heritage.

Situated on the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia, the state of Terengganu is snuggled nicely between Kelantan in the north and Pahang in the south. It is the state with the longest coastline in the country. The islands of Perhentian, Redang and a few other smaller islands make up Terengganu’s marine park. Overall, the state is characterized by strong Malay culture, laidback lifestyle, tranquil coastal towns and rustic villages.

Other than pristine beaches and islands, the state is also home to the picturesque Kenyir Lake, the largest manmade lake in Southeast Asia. It is also noted for its traditional boat building activities, located at Pulau Duyong. This is where local craftsmen create beautifullyhandcrafted shipping vessels straight from memory and without referring to any blueprint or plans.

Visit Kelantan 2008

Dubbed as the “Cradle of Malay Civilization”, Kelantan focuses its Visit Kelantan 2008 campaign on its unique culture with special highlights on folkbased activities. Kelantan has lined up 28 events that can draw both local and international tourists to the state this year.

It is a charming destination with colourful traditions, interesting pastimes and superb handicrafts. Folkbased activities such as topspinning, giant kiteflying and woodcarving still thrive in this state.

Word has it that the batik and songket fabrics produced by cottage industries here are among the best in the country.

The state still holds many war relics from the Japanese Occupation during World War II, as this was where the Japanese troops made their first landing in Malaya.

Amidst the very strong Islamic influence, the state, ironically, is home to the longest statue of Reclining Buddha as well as one of the largest statues of Sitting Buddha in Southeast Asia.

Visitors to the state can catch traditional performances such as shadow puppetry, Malay martial arts, folk games and musical performances at the Cultural Centre, while adventure buffs can have some thrills river rafting at Nenggiri River or hiking up Gunung Stong.

Visit Kedah 2008

The Visit Kedah 2008 is held in conjunction with the golden jubilee celebrations of the reign of the Sultan Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah, the Sultan of Kedah.

A total of 70 events (including 29 to be hosted in Langkawi) have been planned to help the state achieve its target of 3.88 million tourists this year.

The state of Kedah is located at the north of Peninsular Malaysia, flanked by Perlis on the northwest, Perak on the southeast and Penang on the southwest. It also shares a border with Thailand on the northeast.

Kedah is known as the “rice bowl of Malaysia” due to the vast rice fields found in the state. It is also home to the first geopark in Southeast Asia – the Langkawi Geopark. Besides the scenic and tranquil island of Langkawi, Kedah has many other tourist attractions such as Sedim River (whitewater rafting and the longest treetop walk), Merbok River (mangrove biodiversity) and Ulu Muda Eco Park (forest reserve), to name a few.

Kedah’s fascinating and unique natural heritage has been luring many visitors from afar since the 2 nd century. As a matter of fact, Kedah’s Bujang Valley is proud to go down in records as the state with the oldest civilization in the history of Malaysia.

F1 Roadshow 2008 Meets Fans in Melaka Malaysia

The 2008 Formula One Roadshow kicked off at Mahkota Parade in Melaka today and motor racings actually can literally get a taste of the Grand Prix experience.

Roadshow promoters Sepang International Circuit (SIC) and Petronas has set up a GP Café to allow fans experience the warm hospitality services usually offered at the VIP paddock during F1 races as among the attractions at the three-day roadshow.

Offering a wide array of food and beverage, fans can indulge themselves in a cup of latte or a sensuous kebab at the café or opt to test their skills at the F1 simulators at the roadshow.

"This GP Café is some of the new additions to our F1 roadshow this year. We decided on something new this year in conjunction with the 10th edition of the Formula One Petronas Malaysian Grand Prix.

“Of course, there will also be plenty of fun and games, quizzes; goodies and prizes to be won at the roadshow apart from lots of information for the fans. So, I hope to see all the F1 fans in Melaka this weekend," says Azlan Akil, who is SIC Advertising and Promotions Manager.

"Purchases of tickets at the roadshow would also entitled buyers with free gifts - limited edition 2008 PMGP caps and T-shirts," Azlan added.

Slotted as Round 2 of the 2008 Formula One World Championship, the 2008 Formula One Petronas Malaysian Grand Prix will be held at Sepang F1 Circuit from March 21 to 23.

Record Turnout Targeted For 10th Edition of Petronas Malaysian Grand Prix

Targeting 125,000 spectators for the race, Malaysian F1 promoter Sepang International Circuit (SIC) has expressed confidence that the 10th edition of the Formula One PETRONAS Malaysian Grand Prix this year will set a new record in spectators’ turnout and bigger enjoyment for the fans.

While the Formula One race is expected to be as thrilling as ever, particularly with the changes to the regulations for the 2008 season, SIC Chairman Datuk Mokhzani Tun Mahathir noted that the inclusion of the brand new Speedcar Series and GP2 Asia Series as the support races to the event would provide fans with additional excitement.

“On track, the 10th edition of the Formula One PETRONAS Malaysian Grand Prix will provide the most comprehensive race programme with the new GP2 Asia Series and the Speedcar Series joining the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia and Formula BMW Asia as the support races.

“The GP2 Asia Series is an exciting formula series and an extension of the GP2 series that has been running as a support race in the European leg of the Formula One World Championship. Meanwhile, the Speedcar Series Championship is a stock car racing championship that features identical V8 620bhp stock cars, which deliberately lack electronic driver aids.”

“Together with the other two support races – the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia and Formula BMW Asia, the Speedcar Series and the GP2 Asia Series will definitely add to the excitement and provide additional pull in wooing in fans to the circuit,” Mokhzani said in his speech at the official launch of the 2008 Formula One Petronas Malaysian Grand Prix at the Esplande, KLCC in Kuala Lumpur this evening.

Officiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Haji Ahmad Badawi, the ceremony was also attended by Tourism Minister Tengku Datuk Adnan Tengku Mansor, Federal Territories Minister Datuk Zulhasnan Rafique, Deputy Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Liow Tiong Lai and PETRONAS President and Chief Executive Officer Tan Sri Mohd Hassan Marican.

Malaysia will host Round 2 of the 2008 FIA Formula One World Championship from March 21 to 23. The new season will open with the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne from March 13 to 16.

“The track itself is more than ready, with all the upgrades completed. In fact, the Honda, Toyota and Nissan Super GT teams had just completed a weeklong testing this afternoon. Next week, the MotoGP teams would be coming to Sepang Circuit for the first of their three annual testing at Sepang,” said Mokhzani.

Immediately after last year’s Formula One race, SIC had conducted a full resurfacing exercise of the 5.543-km track; providing additional safety features including construction of tarmac run-off areas for Turn 1, 5, 7, 8, 12, 13 and 15. In enhancing safety at the track, we have also extended the kerbs at some stretches at the entrance of Turn 1, Turn 2, Turn 3, Turn 6, Turn 9 and Turn 14.

The circuit had also carried out the necessary face-lift of the entire facilities with renovations and upgrading works for all the hospitality suites and race offices; and I would say that Sepang International Circuit is all ready for the race.

In its effort to woo in the crowd, the SIC Chairman said would be organising a series of nationwide F1 roadshow; beginning with the Mahkota Parade in Malacca from January 25 to 27.

The domestic promotion, he said, was in support of on-going international promotions, which SIC had done with its key partners – PETRONAS, Tourism Malaysia and Kuala Lumpur City since last year.

First organized in October 1999 as the penultimate round of the season, the Formula One PETRONAS Malaysian Grand Prix draws an average of 95,000 spectators annually with the 2007 edition recording the highest number of spectators so far 115,497 fans on Race Day.

On January 1, it had launched a special campaign named 10 Thrilling Offers of the 10th Edition which included free tickets upon purchase of selected tickets, discounts and free gifts of limited edition F1 T-shirts and caps.

The domestic promotion, Mokhzani said, was in support of its on-going international promotions, which SIC had done with its key partners – Petronas, Tourism Malaysia and Kuala Lumpur City since last year.

On average, some 40 percent of the spectators at the Formula One Petronas Malaysian Grand Prix in Sepang are made up of foreigners especially from Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand and Europe countries.

Tickets are priced as low as RM100 and can be purchased via internet at http://www.malaysiangp.com.my/ or by calling TICKET HOTLINE at 603-87782222

The two types of Perahu Dondang Sayang plying the waters of Putrajaya are actual replicas of traditional fishing boats used in the East Coast of Malaysia. Local material is used in the construction. The hull is made of the best local hardwood found in our forest – the Chengal Mas. Each piece of wood is specially selected and seasoned. MALAYSIA VOTED BEST INTERNATIONAL TOURISM DESTINATION

MALAYSIA VOTED BEST INTERNATIONAL TOURISM DESTINATION

For the second time in a row, Malaysia was voted the Best International Tourism Destination by the Global Traveler Magazine. Malaysia beat other strong competitors including Italy, Spain, Thailand and United Kingdom.

Global Traveler Magazine conducted the fourth annual survey of its readers from 1 February to 31 August 2007, with open-ended questions for the best in 49 categories of business and luxury travel.

A total of 15,828 completed questionnaires were received. The questionnaires were made available as an insert in subscriber copies of the magazine and online at the Global Traveler website, www.globaltravelerusa.com/readersurvey.

For those who have been to Malaysia, this result comes as no surprise, as the country not only offers excellent nature, dream beaches and interesting sights, but at the same time an outstanding price-performance-ratio.

Reisereport 2008, a service website for luxury trips at budget prices compares Malaysia to Italy (in second place): tourists often pay much less than 100 Euro per night for the best hotel in Kuala Lumpur, while in Rome, they easily pay 500 Euro or more for the same.

Winners in other categories include Hawaii (Best US Destination), Singapore Airlines (Best Airline), Seoul Incheon Airport (Best Airport), SkyTeam (Best Airline Alliance), Hotel Bel-Air (Best US Hotel), Gleneagles, Scotland (Best International Golf Resort) and Mandarin Oriental (Best Hotel Chain in Asia).

Mrs Ivana Trump from the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS) presented the awards in New York on 16 January 2008. Receiving the award on behalf of Tourism Malaysia was Tourism Malaysia’s Deputy Director General, Datin Dalilah Ahmad. The ceremony was attended by over 300 travel industry professionals, many of whom have donated to LLS.

Video - Malaysia Thaipusam Festival 2008

When the constellation of Pusam rises over the eastern horizon, and the full moon shines the earth in the month of Thai (the 10th month of the Tamil calendar), Tamil devotees take to the streets in a celebration to worship and commemorate the birth of Lord Murugan, and the day he was bestowed the mighty shakthi vel (lance) for his quest to vanquish evil in the world.

As the story has it, Lord Murugan (also known as Lord Subramaniam) and son to Lord Shiva and the goddess Parvati, was given the task to assist the Devas to battle and rid of the evil manifestation known as Asuras that has for centuries brought the world in a turmoil of pain and sufferings.

The Devas, who have sought the divine assistance of Lord Shiva, has for the longest time fought the Asuras but to no avail and were told by the gods that only the son of Lord Shiva can lead them to victory in their battle. True to the prediction, good triumph over evil and peace was brought to the land.

Though originally celebrated by Tamil Indians from Tamil Nadu, Thaipusam has through time been celebrated in other parts of the world including Malaysia, Singapore, Sri Lanka and South Africa.

Here, Thaipusam was brought to our shores and preserved by the Indian community who migrated from India during the 19th century. Todate, the celebration has not only grew in size, having witness over a million devotees flooding the compound area of Batu Caves where the celebration is carried out annually in Selangor, but also in popularity as dozens of visitors from all around come to watch the colourful and spiritual proceedings.

Devotees of all ages and backgrounds come to pay their respect and perform ritual acts as atonement. Those who would like for their wishes to be granted by Lord Murugan would purify themselves by fasting and praying days before the celebration. Some would go on a spiritual journey carrying the kavadis, a hill shaped metal frame attached to the body, barefoot from their home to the temple while some other devotees would have their bodies and cheeks pierced with hooks and other metal objects.

Aside from Batu Caves, Thaipusam, which falls on January 23 this year, can also be observed at Jalan Waterfall in Penang and Ipoh, Perak.

Rantau Abang Beach

Rantau Abang Beach

At 22km north of Kuala Dungun and 80km south of Kuala Terengganu, it is probably the most talked about tourist spot in Terengganu. There was a time when a great number of giant leatherback turtles came to Rantau Abang to lay their eggs between May and August. (Peak egg laying months are June and July).

Rantau Abang beaches are well-known for its turtles. In fact, the state of Terengganu's penchant to associate itself with turtles started here in Rantau Abang. Nonetheless, this beautiful beach makes up for it. The water is crystal clear and enticing enough for a swim. You could also climb the giant boulder rock, admiring its geological formation of different sedimentary layers throughout millions of years. Also it provides an amazing bird's eye view of the beach.

For more information on the leatherbacks, there is a Turtle Information Centre managed by the Department of Fisheries at Rantau Abang. Tanjung Jara Beach

Tanjung Jara Beach

Tanjung Jara embraced by the blue-green waters of the South China Sea, this is one of the more striking beaches. Long, wide stretches of golden sands sloping gently into the greenish blue waters are prominent.

Apart from its breathtaking sunsets, its openness to the powerful waves from the South China Sea creates fascinating sand dunes. Steady winds and reasonably dramatic surf provide an exciting and diverse array of water activities, such as wind surfing, boating and sailing, while the wide, open waters permit kayaking, snorkeling, deep-sea fishing and diving.

Located here is the Tanjung Jara Beach Resort. Styled after a Malay palace, but with all the modern amenities one could wish for, the resort is the recipient of the prestigious Aga Khan award for the best hotel architecture. Seven-time Formula One world champion Michael Schumacher took a well-deserved break there after a disastrous season opener in Melbourne. Guests get a taste of the Malay way of life from the wooden chalets and herb garden to traditional spa treatments.

It even caters for "turtle watch" at night between May and September when the turtles visit the beach to lay eggs. The visitors can just tell the reception, that they want to be called, if they have spotted a turtle coming on the beach and they will phone them at night in their room. A little van will take them to the right place on the beach. From here one can even catch a boat to visit some of the fabulous islands off the coast, in particular Pulau Tenggol.

By Car:

If you are driving from Kuala Lumpur, head east towards Kuantan. Use the Karak Highway all the way to Kuantan. The journey should take about three to 3½ hours. Once you arrive in Kuantan, head north-east on highway 3 (coastal road) and you will get to Dungun.

Batu Buruk Beach

Pantai Batu Buruk Kuala Terengganu is undoubtedly the most famous beach in Terengganu, with white sandy beaches and swaying casuarinas lining up behind the shore, like a loyal friend to the waves. During windy days, playing kite on the beach is a good idea but swimming can be dangerous here.

Even if you're not shopping, come along to the Batu Buruk Friday market in Kuala Terengganu to soak in the lively atmosphere.

Fancy doing some shopping while enjoying fresh air and beautiful scenery at the same time?. You can, but only if you're at the Batu Buruk Friday market in Kuala Terengganu.

The shine of clear golden sands against the cool blue sea forms a nice backdrop for the popular market, which was started less than two years ago. It operates from 3pm to 7pm.

There are plenty of non-water-based sports activities conducted here. Kite flying is the most popular activity organised on the beach apart from regular beach soccer in the evening. Paka Beach

Paka Beach

Paka Beach which is about 16km north of Kertih is a secluded wide stretch of golden sands sloping gently into the sea, with small clusters of tall-swaying palms.

The glorious and awe-inspiring daily sunrise can be observed from here or, better still, from the Sungai Paka Bridge near the river mouth. The unfolding of nature's grandeur over fishing villages and coconut groves is best captured as dawn begins to break, with the sky emblazoned in a multitude of fiery red, orange and yellow, lasting no more than ten minutes.

If without the beach, Paka is a typical quite and dead fishing village with wooden kampong houses, jetty and fishing boats. Passing by the petroleum processing plants in the night time is a amazing experience. The huge refinery plant brightly lighted appears in a suddenly in a bare land, like a star city appear in the middle of the sky.

To reach Paka from Kuala Lumpur, take the New East Coast Highway heading towards Kuantan, Pahang. Then head north towards Kuala Terengganu, Terengganu.

As you drive along the road, you will see a large gateway portal that says you've entered the state of Terengganu. Drive until you reach Kemaman town.

In Kemaman, the highway will suddenly turn to the right. Follow the sign heading towards Kuala Terengganu. Around 15km or so north of Kerteh, you'll reach Paka.

By Bus:

Go to the Hentian Putra Bus Station in Kuala Lumpur. Buy a bus ticket to Paka, Terengganu. We recommend that you buy tickets from the bigger and well-known bus companies such as Transnasional, Mara-Liner or Mutiara Express. The bus ride will be between 4 1/2 hours to 6 hours, depending on weather and traffic conditions.

Refrain from taking cheaper bus tickets from bus companies that I did not recommend or you'll end up with an 8-hour trip on a not-so-comfortable bus that breaks down half-way across Pahang.

Please remind the bus driver that you're getting off at Paka.

If you are still confused, just ask the local when you reach Paka as it's the only seaside resort there.
Take the small road that leads to Paka Residence Resort. Behind the Resort is Paka Beach.

Try not to sleep on the bus, after you've reached the Terengganu borders, or you'll drive pass by Paka and end up in Dungun. If you do miss Paka, take the bus all the way to Dungun. Then you can rent a taxi or another bus back to Paka.
Do not forget to get your bags or luggage from the bus luggage compartment when you get off.

By Air:

You'll be boarding a flight from KLIA (Kuala Lumpur International Airport) to Kuantan, Pahang.

When you reach Kuantan Airport, you can take a taxi to Paka (it'll cost you around US$20 or RM80). The journey will take around 2-3 hours.
Or take a bus from Kuantan to Paka (see the bus trip explanation from above).

Rhu Hentian Island

Rhu Hentian Island

Perhaps Perhentian Island, Redang Island and some other pulau are too famous and ‘over heated’ to many people, Rhu Hentian Island which is only 15 nautical miles from offshore Kuala Besut is not known to most people. It is indeed a new discovered and developing island in the tourism industry in East Coast.

Because it is so close to the mainland, Rhu Hentian Island is accessible through Kuala Besut 20 to 30 minutes by boat. The island is not resident at the moment. This no doubt is an added value advantage for holiday seekers. The ecology system on the island and the marine life remain unspoiled due to this reason

To go to Kuala Besut Jetty:

To get to Kuala Besut, you can arrive in Kelantan or Kuala Terengganu. If you come from Kuala Terengganu, take a bus or taxi to Jerteh then another to Kuala Besut, or a direct bus to Kuala Besut. The journey will take nearly one and half hour.
Alternately you can choose to start from Kota Bharu. You can either take a taxi ride or take a bus (leaves every 30 minutes) to Pasir Puteh and then another bus to Besut. On the whole, the journey by taxi will take about one hour from Kota Bahru to Besut.

There are direct buses from Kuala Lumpur to Kuala Besut which take about 9 hours.

To go to Rhu Hentian Island:

Journey to the islands takes about 30 to 45 minutes by speed boat and one and half hours by slow boat. There are a number of boat operators in Kuala Besut offering boat services to Perhentian Island. The return boat ticket cost RM60.00 per person for speed boat and RM40.00 per person for slow boat. Because it is so close to the mainland, Rhu Hentian Island is accessible through Kuala Besut 20 to 30 minutes by boat.

Perhentian Island

Perhentian Island

Perhentian Island

Perhentian Island is situated about 21km off the coast of Terengganu and comprises two islands — Perhentian Besar Island and Perhentian Kecil Island. It is accessible from Kuala Besut Jetty, a one-and-half-hour drive north of Kuala Terengganu.

Surrounded by tropical rainforest, golden sandy beaches, tall swaying palm trees and warm sapphire blue waters, this exotic tropical island is a must for all nature lovers and it is also an ideal destination for swimming, wind surfing, deep sea fishing, sailing, boating and canoeing. It also boasts wonderful underwater treasures of naturally formed landscaped coral gardens and magnificent marine lives.

Coral Bay on Perhentian Kecil Island offers marvellous views of the sunset. It is also a perfect paradise for nature lovers as there are paths available for exploration of the virgin tropical jungle. On the northern shore of Perhentian Besar Island lie three coved bays where you can indulge in turtle watching.

The islands of Perhentian Island offers spectacular dive sites. Sightings of dolphins and whale sharks, the largest fish in the world, are quite common in these waters. These harmless creatures of the sea are usually found close to the equator where they enjoy basking in the warm waters and surprisingly take little or no notice of divers.

Perhentian Island can be reached in 20 minutes by speed boat from the jetty in Kuala Besut, which is about 75 minutes away from Kuala Terengganu.
or
From Kuala Terengganu, take a bus or taxi to the jumping-off point of Kuala Besut. It takes about an hour. From the Fisheries Complex at Kuala Besut, take a boat to Perhentian Island. The boat ride takes about 1 1/2 hours.

Lang Tengah Island

Lang Tengah Island

Lang Tengah Island

Lang Tengah Island is a very small island located between Perhentian Island and Redang Island that can be reached by a 30 minutes boat ride from Merang jetty. The clear emerald waters and the coral reefs around it are popular with scuba divers and snorkellers. The island itself is covered by hilly tropical rainforest with varied flora and fauna.

According to the locals, Lang Tengah takes it name from two sayings. The first one saying that ‘Lang’ comes from ‘Helang’ in the Malay language which means an eagle, therefore Lang Tengah means eagles resting on the middle island. The second saying spread among the villagers where once upon a time the island used to be the post road for traders and fisherman from the north to replenish their supplies while taking a rest after a long journey.

To get to the island, you need to arrive in Kuala Terengganu then catch a boat from Merang Jetty. The jetty in Merang is about 30 minutes or 40km from Kuala Terengganu and is accessible through several alternatives.

By Car

Head to the north of Kuala Terengganu. You will pass through typical Malay villages. It is certainly a pleasant journey. If you are not in hurry, do stop by to grab some local foods.

Redang Island

Redang Island Terengganu

Redang Island

Accessible from Merang Jetty in Setiu, a 30-minute drive north of Kuala Terengganu, off the Terengganu coastline on the northeastern coast is the Redang Archipelago. It is made up of a few islands namely Redang Island (the largest), Pinang Island, Kerengga Island, Lima Island, Ekor Tebu Island and Susu Dara Island. This area has also been gazetted as a marine park and its brilliant underwater world is one of the best in Malaysia. Meanwhile Pinang Island has a visitors’ centre that houses an exhibition room, an audio-visual room, a research lab, turtle touch pools and chalets.

Redang Island is indeed one of Malaysia’s most idyllic islands. This tropical paradise offers pearly-white sandy beaches, sparkling clear seawater, lovely sunrises and spectacular marine life. Its marvellous marine fish varieties, turtles and huge range of coral reefs make it a wonderful diving spot and its diverse coral species are said to be among the best in the world. The five famous dive sites in Redang are Tanjung Lang, Tanjung Tokong, Tanjung Gua Kawah, Pasir Panjang and Batu Mak Cantek. There are even a few shipwrecks dive sites, offering an adventure for divers.

Apart from diving, beach lovers can also enjoy other activities like swimming, snorkelling, fishing, boating or sunbathing. You can check in to one of the many resorts on the island, offering full packages including land and sea transfers, accommodation, full board meals and activities or room packages only. Bookings can be arranged at any local or foreign travel agents for a delightful island getaway.

Redang can be reached within an hour by speed boat from jetty in Merang, a small fishing village about 30 minutes by road from Kuala Terengganu. Alternatively, you may also take a boat ride from Shah Bandar Jetty in Kuala Terengganu island.

Ferry service is also available from the Kuala Terengganu jetty and it takes 45 minutes to reach the island.

Tenggol Island

Tenggol Island Terannganu

Tenggol Island

Tenggol Island is another beautiful diving getaway island just 45 minutes from the coastal jetty in Kuala Dungun. It size is approximately 3km in length and 2km in width. However, this has not prevented it from becoming a paradise for many people especially diving enthusiasts.

The sandy beach blends harmoniously with the surrounding environment. Further inland are forested rocky hills that make it a scenic destination for adventure seekers. The hills rising over 800ft offer a panoramic view of the island. This rocky terrain extends from the interior of the island to the ocean and has created a dramatic ideal hideaway for marine life.

For example in Teluk Air Tawar there is a large spread of sloping reef on the rocky wall, whereas Rajawali Reef, with vertical rocky walls which fall as deep as 32m, is home to corals and other marine life like batfish and black tip reef sharks. Besides calm coral gardens, you could also chance upon humphead parrotfish, giant stingray, bat fishes, whale sharks, leopard sharks, schooling jacks and others in the diving spots around Tenggol. Whale sharks are seen in certain areas from August to October every year.

Ferry services have to be arranged from Kuala Dungun as Pulau Tenggol is not serviced by public or regular transport. Tenggol Aqua Resort provides ferry services between the island and Kuala Dungun.

The nearest airport are the Kerteh (30mins. From Kuala Dungun), Kuala Terengganu (1hr) and Kuantan (2hr 30mins). Visitors can fly in and hire a taxi to Kuala Dungun.

Air-conditioned coaches from Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Terengganu also stop at Kuala Dungun. Or you can drive to Kuala Dungun, park at the office of Tenggol Aqua Resort, and take the resort ferry to Pulau Tenggol. From Kuala Lumpur, it is a leisurely and scenic 7hr 30mins drive to Kuala Dungun.

Gemia Island

Gemia Island Terengganu

Gemia Island

Another new born island in Terengganu, Gemia Island (perhaps is more accurate to say, new born tourism spot) is a tiny island located just beside Kapas Island.
There is only one resort on the island to accommodate the raising number of tourists. Rooms are stretching along the rocky shore. Though the beach is narrow, yet, like other islands in east coast Peninsular Malaysia, it is covered by white sand.

Because it is new and small and moreover, like other island hidden in the shadow of Redang and Perhentian Island, Gemia Island is less known to the tourists. Nevertheless, this has prepared the island a peaceful and quite atmosphere for holiday seekers and also the wildlife. Sea eagles, reef herons, tern and also the precious giant leatherback turtle come to nest their eggs on this island every year. Like some of the regular tourists who spend their holiday on the island every year, green turtles, Hawksbill and Olive Ridley turtle are also regular visitors too.

Pulau Gemia, a 15-minute boat ride from the Marang jetty in Terengganu, is a tiny island located just beside Pulau Kapas.

By Bus

There are no bus services directly to the Marang jetty. The nearest destination is Kuala Terengganu. From there, you can either charter a taxi or a van to take you to the Marang jetty.

By Air

There are two airlines that service the Kuala Trengganu airport, namely AirAsia and MAS. From the airport, you need to take a taxi or charter a van to take you to the Marang jetty.

By car

The drive from Kuala Lumpur to Kuala Terengganu takes about 8 hours. Take the Karak Highway to get to Kuantan. From there, follow the sign board to Kuala Terengganu. One can choose to travel during day time and reaches Kuala Terengganu to spend the night or one can travel at night and reach there just in time for breakfast. After a rest stop at Kuala Terengganu, proceed to the Marang jetty which is about half an hour drive away from Kuala Terengganu town. Upon reaching Marang, there are plenty of parking areas just opposite the jetty. Charges are per-day basis.

Kapas Island

Kapas Island Terengganu

Kapas Island

Kapas Island is situated offshore about 30 minutes by slow boat or 10 minutes by fast boat from Marang jetty, 20 minutes south of Kuala Terengganu. It is a lovely small island with beautiful, quiet, unspoiled sandy beaches; cool and clear blue waters, swaying coconut trees and caves with swallows’ nests. Its waters are home to beautiful marine life such as fish, turtles, corals and others. It is a great place for swimming, snorkelling, diving, wind surfing, kayaking, boating or just pure relaxation. Accommodation varies from deluxe and budget chalets offering air conditioned or fan.

The waters around the island abound with sea-shells, fish and turtles. Snorkelling and underwater diving are popular along stretched of shallow coral reefs of the island's western shore. A World War II shipwreck located 5 nautical miles offshore is the key attraction to divers. During the months of May to August, you can go squid fishing.

Kapas Island is just 10 minutes away by speed boat from Marang jetty, which is 18km south of Kuala Terengganu or about 20 minutes by road.

To get to the islands, you can also board a bus or taxi at Kuala Terengganu for the fishing village of Marang. It costs about RM1.00 by bus and RM10.00 by non-airconditioned taxi. Air-conditioned taxis charge RM15.00.

Visit Terengganu Year 2008

Terengganu's strategic location facing the South China Sea made it an important trade center in ancient times. Early records indicate that it had trading relations with China. Even the famous Admiral Zheng He actually stopped for freshwater & other supplies in Kuala Terengganu on his way across the globe. Terengganu has also long been an important Malay settlement with descendants coming from the Yunnan district, Indian continent and the Indonesian archipelago. Recent archaeological sites found in Bewah Cave in Kenyir Lake indicate the existence of early settlements as far back as 4,000BC. The discovery of Batu Bersurat (Inscribed Stone) in Kuala Berang marks an important historical and religious significance. The stone was inscribed with the Malay Arabic Jawi language which contains the Islamic decree proving the acceptance of Islamic teachings by King Mandalika dated 1303 AD.

The Terengganu Sultanate originated almost 300 years ago when Tun Zainal Abidin became the first Sultan (Sultan Zainal Abidin I) in 1708. The current ruler is Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin, the 16th Sultan, who was proclaimed ruler of the state on May 15, 1998, becoming the youngest ruler in Malaysia. Terengganu became a member of the Federation of Malaya in 1948, and a state of independent Malaya in 1957.

AirAsia flies daily direct to Guangzhou-one of China's Leading commercial and manufacturing regions

AirAsia flies daily direct to Guangzhou-one of China's Leading commercial and manufacturing regions.

Maiden Flight takes off on 16th January 2007

GUANGZHOU, 16TH JANUARY 2008 – AirAsia, the leading, largest and award-winning low-cost carrier in Asia, which recently won the coveted CAPA Airline of the Year 2007 award today officially launched its direct daily flights to Guangzhou via Baiyun International airport from the LCC Terminal, Kuala Lumpur. This will be the fourth destination to mainland China after Shenzhen, Xiamen and Macau within the group.

Since the announcement on 19 December 2007 of the new route, the RM88.88* or RMB188* low fare has made waves in both Guangzhou and Kuala Lumpur. 6,000 seats were snapped up within the first few hours even before sales advertisements were out, and a total of 25,000 seats were sold in under 3 weeks. This reveals the huge market potential in the two cities, and indicates the airline’s popularity of its low fare deals in the China market.

The launch of Guangzhou is part of AirAsia’s strategic move in responding to strong consumer demands from Southern China region for low cost travel. It is also a strategic prologue and milestone for both AirAsia and Baiyun International Airport; which is the 3rd busiest and largest international airport in China. With an approximate population of 9.5 million, Guangzhou is known as one of mainland China’s leading commercial and manufacturing regions and serves as a entryway to Pearl River Delta; an ideal gateway to more than 100 major cities in China.

Ms Kathleen Tan, Regional Head of Commercial for AirAsia, represented AirAsia at the welcome reception and press conference of AirAsia’s inaugural route launch in Baiyun International Airport today. Present at the function were Vice Secretary General of Guangzhou Municipal People's Government, Mr. Zhang Huoqing; Mr. Chen Xiao Ning, Deputy President, Guangdong Airport Management Corp.; Mr. Zhang Kejian, GM, Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport Co., Ltd; Mr. Ma Xin Hang, Deputy General Manager of Baiyun International Airport Ltd.; En. Roslan Abdul Rahman, Consul General of Malaysian Consulate in Guangzhou; head officers of Baiyun Airport and some 100 local and foreign media members.

A lion dance performance was the prelude to the Inaugural Ceremony, followed by ribbon cutting by the VIPs. The guests were also entertained by a Malaysian Cultural dance troupe from Sabah, adding both Malaysia and China cultural elements to the event.

Mr. Ma Xin Hang, Deputy GM, Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport Co., Ltd said “The Airport which is the first on the Chinese mainland is designed and built in conformity to the hub airport mode. It is now the largest, best equipped and most modernized civil air terminal in China. Serving 111 destinations at home and abroad with 152 domestic, international and regional air routes, the airport functions as a major international port of China as well as an air hub with worldwide connections. We will ensure, we will provide quality service to AirAsia.”

Ms Kathleen Tan, Regional Head of Commercial, AirAsia, said, “Our strategic move to expand into Guangzhou has been a long waited route by many Malaysians. With globalization and the rising economy in China, our low fares will now encourage the Malaysian business community to strengthen their investments in China and vice versa. With the Olympic fever building up in China for 2008, there is no better time to launch this route than today. We believe our low fares will grant more Chinese and Malaysians the freedom to fly and further compliment tourism and economic growth of both countries to greater heights.”

“We are here to deliver AirAsia’s amazing low fares to the people of China, to allow more organizations, businesses and families to realize the dream of cost effective air travel. With our low fares, AirAsia will be the bridge linking Malaysia to China and through our hub in Kuala Lumpur, serve as an entryway to the Asean network and Australia via AirAsia X. We look forward in creating a win-win solution for both ends, by expanding into the huge market of air travel in China.”

“From a short span of 6 years, the airline has help created a new level of tourism and new business opportunities with our vibrant low fares concept. We anticipate carrying 25 million guests with the 23 new A320 plane deliveries this year. AirAsia is proud and honored to serve the people in Guangzhou city. We look forward to splash the sky of Baiyun International Airport red, and enliven this legendary ‘Goat’ city.” concluded Kathleen.

The Malaysian Consul General to Guangzhou, Mr. Roslan Abdul Rahman said, “We hope the opening of this new route will accelerate tourism, attracting more visitors to our country with its diversified culture, unique heritage, wide rainforest, beautiful beaches, busy metropolitan, and an array of shopping and good food as Malaysia has some entertaining and modern cities. Malaysia has also encouraged more business investors from abroad and the economic stability in the country would definitely foster great business ties between the two countries. We believe that AirAsia will expand their network in Southern China to meet the growing demand here. AirAsia’s decision to open this new route also meets the Malaysia Government’s efforts to make Malaysia the low cost carrier hub for Asia. MALAYSIA'S PROTON DEBUTS IN CHINA WITH EUROPESTAR RCR

MALAYSIA'S PROTON DEBUTS IN CHINA WITH EUROPESTAR RCR

BEIJING (CHINA), 9 January 2008 – The Proton GEN.2, rebadged as EUROPESTAR RCR for the China market, was officially launched today in Beijing. Launched by the Chairman of Youngman Automobile Sales Co. Ltd., Mr. Pang Qingnian and witnessed by the Chairman of PROTON Holdings Berhad, Dato' Mohd Azlan Hashim and the Malaysian Ambassador to China, His Excellency Dato' Norulzaman Syed Kamarulzaman. This launch paves the way for Proton cars to enter China, the world's fastest-growing car market.

Under its plans for the EUROPESTAR brand, Youngman is confident of selling the 30,000 completely built-up (CBU) units of GEN.2 it has ordered from PROTON within the 20 month delivery period.

Youngman has initially appointed 40 dealers to support the launch in terms of managing its sales, service and spare parts operations for the EUROPESTAR brand in China.

The EUROPESTAR RCR is targeted at small business owners, middle-income salaried workers and civil servants between the ages of 25-35 who are expected to find the model stylish, comfortable and yet affordable.

With its sporty stylish advanced design, the competitively priced EUROPESTAR RCR is expected to have a strong appeal in China, as indicated by the initial bookings of 1,500 units prior to the launch, said Dato' Mohd Azlan.

He expressed optimism that the rebadged GEN.2 will make inroads for PROTON in this new and important market, with prospects for significant growth.

With this launch of EUROPESTAR RCR, Dato' Mohd Azlan said that Youngman Group has indicated to PROTON that it wants to quickly commence completely knocked-down (CKD) assembly of these cars at its Jinan plant, which has a capacity to produce 300,000 cars.

Mr. Pang said that he believes that EUROPESTAR RCR has potential to grow to be a class leader in the hatchback segment of the passenger car market in China and has set a target to capture 20 per cent in 24 months.

Dato' Mohd Azlan said PROTON is optimistic that Youngman will make the EUROPESTAR brand a success in China given its commitment shown to this project and its track record in this market. This is clearly evident in the success of its involvement in the luxury coach business in China, where it took only three years to surpass other established big names to be No 1. Youngman now has an 85 per cent share of the luxury coach market segment.

In addition to the import of 30,000 GEN.2, Youngman has a collaborative engineering arrangement with PROTON to develop a new range of Made-in-China EUROPESTAR models. Under this collaborative arrangement, Youngman has the license for the GEN.2 platform and Campro engine as well as for the supply of genuine parts.

This business arrangement with Youngman paves the way for a greater depth of involvement for PROTON in China and will earn for PROTON significant revenue over the longer term.

"China is set to be yet another key market that will feature prominently in PROTON’S export optimization plan," continued Dato’ Mohd Azlan.
